I have seen many brands including Dirt Devil and Hoover ... but I am so confused what to buy.

I think you might have heard of Dyson and his master to speak in the commercial, how good is your vacuum ..
I have one of these machines and incredible value for the price of about $ 425 .. I have a simple test vaccuming with my old Hoover vacuum cleaner and then with the Dyson and I was surprised how much dust sucked ..
Its good on the ground, and on my wood floor and I see no scratches on my floor.
